How to Hand-Wash Bras: A Simple Routine That Protects Their Shape

|COMFBAY

Hand-washing takes only a few minutes and is one of the easiest ways to help a bra keep its stretch and shape. You do not need a complicated routine: cool water, a small amount of gentle detergent, and patience while the bra dries are enough.

Filling a basin with cool water for bra washing

Set up a gentle wash

Fill a clean basin with cool or lukewarm water. Add a small amount of mild detergent and swirl it through the water before adding the bra. Hook the back closure so it cannot snag the fabric, then let the bra soak for a few minutes.

Avoid hot water and bleach. Heat can stress elastic, while harsh products may affect delicate fabrics and smooth finishes.

Gently washing a bra by hand

Swish, rinse, and never twist

Gently move the bra through the water with your hands. Focus on areas that touch the skin, but do not scrub cups or wring the band. Rinse in clean water until it runs clear. Press out water lightly; twisting the cups or straps can change their shape.

If you prefer using a washing machine occasionally, our bra laundry guide explains when a mesh bag and delicate cycle are a reasonable backup.

Drying bras flat on a towel

Dry flat and reshape the cups

Lay the bra flat on a clean towel, reshape the cups with your hands, and leave it away from direct heat. Do not use a tumble dryer; it can shorten the life of elastic. Rotating your bras between wears also gives each band time to recover and makes wash day less urgent.

How often should you wash a bra?

There is no one number for everyone. If you have had a warm day, worked out, or used body products that transfer to the fabric, wash it sooner. On lighter-wear days, rotate between bras and wash after several wears. The useful rule is to wash before oils and sweat build up, while avoiding unnecessary harsh laundering.

Save your favorite bras for the right jobs

Use a rotation so one bra is not stretched and washed every day. Keep a smooth everyday option, a style for special necklines, and a spare that gives the others time to air out. This simple habit often does more for longevity than buying a new bra at the first sign of wear.
