Why Does My Bra Dig Into My Armpit? 4 Fit Checks That Help

|COMFBAY

An underarm edge that pinches, rubs, or keeps asking for an adjustment can make an otherwise ordinary day feel long. The useful first step is not tightening everything. Look at where the discomfort starts and test one part of the fit at a time.

Check the Cup Edge Before the Strap

If the outer cup cuts into tissue near the underarm, the cup may not have enough room or its edge may not suit your shape. Put the bra on, settle into the cups, and look at the side in a mirror. The edge should lie close without pressing a deep line into your skin.

Make Sure the Band Is Level

A band that rides upward can pull the whole bra out of position and make the side edge feel harsher. Check it from the side and back after you lift your arms, sit down, and reach forward. The band should remain roughly level instead of creeping toward your shoulder blades.

Do Not Solve It by Overtightening the Straps

Straps help fine-tune the cup position. They are not meant to pull the entire bra upward. If loosening the straps improves the underarm area but makes the cups unstable, revisit the band and cup fit rather than accepting a painful compromise.

Test It Under a Familiar Top

Wear a thin top you reach for often. Walk, sit at a desk, and reach for something overhead. A fit that is comfortable only while standing still is not yet a useful everyday fit. When the cup edge stays smooth through normal movement, you have a better answer than a quick strap adjustment.

If the area remains painful, stop wearing that bra and choose a different size or shape. Comfort is part of fit, not an extra.

When a Different Shape May Help

Two bras in the same labeled size can feel very different at the underarm. A taller side panel, a softer cup edge, or more room toward the outer cup may suit you better. Compare one change at a time under the same top.

If the bra is painful, leaves broken skin, or the discomfort does not settle after taking it off, stop wearing it and seek advice from a qualified clinician.
