How to Measure Your Bra Size at Home: A Simple Starting Point

|COMFBAY

Measuring at home is useful when your usual bra has started to feel different or you are trying a new brand. It does not replace trying the bra on, but it gives you a sensible place to begin instead of guessing from a letter size alone.

Get Ready Before You Measure

Wear a thin, non-padded top or your best-fitting unlined bra. Stand naturally and use a soft measuring tape. Keep it level and snug enough to stay in place, but do not pull it tight enough to change your shape. If you can, measure twice and write both numbers down.

Measure Your Underbust First

Wrap the tape around your ribcage directly beneath the bust. Breathe normally. The tape should sit straight across your back rather than angling upward. This measurement is the starting point for band size.

A band does most of the supporting work. If your current band rides up, slides around, or feels loose from the start, its number may no longer be your best starting point. Our guide to a level bra band can help you judge the final fit.

Measure Around the Fullest Part

Keeping the tape parallel to the floor, measure around the fullest part of your bust. Do not squeeze the tape down. This number, compared with your underbust measurement, helps estimate cup volume.

Use the Numbers as a Starting Point, Not a Verdict

Different bra constructions can fit differently even in the same size. A smooth wireless style, a structured cup, and a strapless bra may each feel best in a slightly different combination. Use the brand chart, then check how the band and cups sit on your body.

Do a Short Fit Test

Once you have a size to try, fasten the band on the loosest comfortable hook. Settle into the cups, then lift your arms, sit down, and wear a familiar top. The band should remain level. The cup edge should lie close without digging in, empty space, or overflow.

If you are between two sizes, compare one change at a time rather than tightening every strap. Keep the tags on while you test. The best result is the size that stays comfortable through the movements you actually make.

Write Down What You Notice

Measurements are easier to use when you add one or two fit notes: whether the band rises, whether the cup gapes, or whether you feel pressure at the side. That record makes a size exchange more useful than simply choosing the next number at random. If you need a letter-size starting point, use our bra size conversion guide.
