What Are Sister Sizes in Bras? A Simple Fit Guide

|COMFBAY

Sister sizes are bra sizes with a similar cup volume but a different band length. They can be useful when the cups feel close but the band does not. They are not a shortcut for ignoring a bad fit.

The Simple Pattern

When you go down one band size, go up one cup letter. When you go up one band size, go down one cup letter. For example, 34C sits near 32D and 36B in cup volume.

That does not mean all three will feel the same. The band changes where the cups sit, how the straps are placed, and how firmly the bra anchors around your ribcage.

Use Sister Sizes for One Clear Problem

Try a nearby sister size only after you identify the issue.

  • If the band rides up or feels too easy to pull away, try a smaller band with the next cup letter up.
  • If the band feels uncomfortably firm but the cups are otherwise close, try a larger band with the next cup letter down.
  • If the cup edge gaps or cuts in, do not assume a sister size will solve it. Cup shape may be the real issue.

Alpha Sizes Need an Extra Check

S, M, L, and XL charts combine several band-and-cup sizes. That means two sister sizes can fall into different alpha sizes on the same chart. Always use the product’s own conversion chart after you work out the band and cup combination you want.

For example, 34C, 32D, and 36B are nearby sister sizes in traditional sizing. On a COMFBAY alpha-size chart, however, 34C and 32D can map to S while 36B can map to M. The label changes because the band is part of the product’s fit calculation. This is why sister-size math is a conversation starter, not the final checkout choice.

Test the Band Before You Decide

Fasten the bra on the loosest available setting. The band should stay roughly level when you lift your arms and relax them. If it climbs up your back, it is probably not giving the cups a stable base.

Read our measurement steps in our size guide if you are unsure whether the original band size was right.

Then use our bra size to letter-size conversion guide to compare that result with the product’s S–3XL chart.

Keep the Goal Simple

A sister size is useful when it makes the bra more comfortable and stable. If you are repeatedly pulling the band down, tightening one strap, or smoothing the cup edge back into place, try a different style instead of continuing to trade band and cup sizes.
